This month, we had the joy of receiving a group of pilgrims from the diocese of Luxeuil which is familiar to us as one of the first foundations of St. Columban in France. After joining us for lunch that was prepared to perfection by our kitchen staff, Anne Ryan introduced the pilgrims to our Congregation and shared with them the strong connection which Mother Mary Patrick had with the Friends of St. Columban in Europe when the group was first established in 1948. Anne concluded with the desire to ‘carry in our hearts the hope and prayer that our pilgrimage through life brings God’s blessing of mutuality and interconnection and enduring friendship – and a future full of hope for us and for all people and the planet at this time’.
Following celebration of the Eucharist in our chapel, the group clearly wanted to extend their time with us so wandered around the grounds, resplendent these days in all the glory of Spring. Although we were dependent on a French guide who translated for us, it was clear that language was no barrier between us and the group, united as were in our deep devotion to St. Columban. The visit was brought to an end with the group gathering in the parlour with a few of us and singing a hymn to our patron in French!
