Nollaig na mBan.  Women’s Christmas.

Nollaig na mBan.  Women’s Christmas.

Greetings on this the Feast of the Epiphany, also known in Gaelic as Nollaig na mBan!  Nollaig means Christmas and Ban means women. The old Gaelic tradition of “Nollaig na mBan” or “Women’s Christmas” celebrates Epiphany on January 6th and closes the Christmas season. It was not unusual for another turkey or goose to be cooked on this special day. This was declared the day Christmas decorations were taken down. This was also the day that women were given leave to take a break from cooking and from house duties and sit back to be served!

The liturgy of the day, the Epiphany, has the Prophet Isaiah calling out to us to stand up and look around us because God’s revelation is shining over us.

May the Star that guided the Magi, guide your path through the year ahead.
