Sister Rita Dooney, RIP

Sister Rita Dooney, after a short illness, died peacefully in hospital on 10 November,  2004.
Born on September 3, 1926 in Ballaghaderreen, Co Roscommon, Ireland, Gertrude Dooney, joined the Columban Sisters in Cahiracon, Co Clare in 1947 and became know as Sister Mary Rita.

She made Profession of First Vows on October 3, 1949 and was then missioned to Los Angeles where she taught in Our Lady of Guadalupe School. In 1968 she graduated Summa Cum Laude from Mercy College, Pittsburgh.

For many years Rita served the Columban Sisters’ communities in the US as local and Regional Superior. A good listener, she was always ready to help the sisters in whatever way she could.

During the time of great change after Vatican ll, she led the communities in the updating required by the Council. Her great love of the Church and of the Congregation informed all she did.
