Diamond Jubilee Celebrations for Sister Mary Ita O'Mahony |
In September 1943 Sheila O’Mahony left her family and home at Liosarourke, Co. Cork, Ireland to join the Columban Sisters; the second member of her family to follow that road. Perhaps the Orient tidings filtered through Bishop Edward. J. Galvin, the neighbours son, influenced the choice? Sheila now called Sister. Mary Ita was professed in March 1946. One year after profession she joined the pioneering group of Columban Sistes missioned to Burma, now know as Myanmar. After 20 years in Burma Ita served 12 years as Congregational Bursar followed by another 10 years in the Philippines and then returned to mission at Magheramore. |
