On 14 March 2009 the Diamond Jubilee of the
Profession of Sister Philomena O’Sullivan was
celebrated in the Central House of the
Columban Sisters in Seoul. Sisters,
priests, seminarians, lay missionaries,
friends and co-workers of Sister Philomena
gathered for the occasion. The Eucharist was
celebrated by Father Michael O’Grady, SSC while
the music and singing was provided by Columban
sisters, novices and postulants. Through a
shared homily Sisters and friends shared their
experiences of living and working with Sister
Philomena. Some had known her since 1955 when
she first arrived in Chuncheon. The
celebrations and sharing continued during the
delicious meal which followed.

Born in Mallow, Co. Cork, Sister
Philomena left Ireland for Korea in June 1955 with Sister Mary David Mannion. They were the second group of Sisters
to arrive, the first group having arrived in
January of that year. Sister Philomena spent
six months in Mokpo before moving to Chuncheon
where she became a friend of the sick poor and
the disadvantaged.
