In a spirit of joyful thanksgiving, Columban Sisters with relatives and friends of Sister Barbara O'Sullivan gathered at the Motherhouse of the Columban Sisters in Magheramore, Wicklow, Ireland on April 5 2008 to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Sister Barbara's First Profession as a Columban Sister. From Ovens, Co Cork, Barbara joined the Columban Sisters in Cahiracon, Co. Clare on October 3, 1945 and made First Profession of Vows on April 5, 1948. A Jubilee Eucharist was celebrated in the convent chapel and then all enjoyed a celebratory meal.

Barbara came from a family of six. Two of her sisters joined the Bon Secour Sisters in Cork. A third sister, Sheila, went to Brisbane, Australia as did her late brother, Owen. Her younger brother, Joe, also deceased, lived with his family in Suffolk in England. It was a great joy to Sister Barbara to have Joe's son, Jamie, and his family present. Jamie read the first reading at the Mass. |

After her First Profession, Sister Barbara trained as a nurse in the Mercy Hospital, Cork. She was then assigned to Hong Kong where she worked in the Ruttonjee Sanatorium and later in Sandy Bay for many years. With courage and great flair she gave herself to the mission and grew to love the Chinese people. As the theatre sister, she carried many responsibilities, especially when the advanced spinal surgery for tuberculosis was pioneered. In later years she was secretary to Cardinal Wu a post she held until she retired to Magheramore in 2003 where she continues as an active member of the community.
