Columban Gathering 2008

From July 17th. - 19th. 2008,  over 60 Columban Sisters met  in 'Bobbio' - the retreat centre at the Motherhouse in Magheramore, Wicklow, Ireland for the annual 'Columban Gathering'.  Mission Areas from around the world were represented by Sisters who were in Ireland on vacation at that time.

The theme for the first day was Trafficking of Persons.  Sisters Maura O’Donohue  MMM and Joan Roddy DMJ gave input  the topic.

The second day day was facilitated by Kathleen McGrath,SSC and Monica Kelly,SSC.  and  the focus was: 'Migrants'.  Input was given by  Fr. Bobby Gilmore SSC and four Filipino friends from the Migrant Centre in Dublin.

The hope embodied in the day was caught in the opening song:  'Stranger no More. A  Song of Hospitality'

In the afternoon there was information and sharing on the  the new venture of the Columban Sisters,  'Pilgrim Space'.  'Welcome' seems to be the key word of this special place. It is a drop-in centre, alongside the Dublin bus station, offering a quiet  welcoming space, information and support to people especially those who may need help to develop basic language skills.

Sister Moya Hegarty, OSU  lead our last morning.  Moya who had been present from the beginning  was asked to help us integrate the whole experience of the Event.  She used the Book of Ruth.  Moya  read the story of Ruth with us. She read it from the perspective of the story itself, the context of the input of the two days and of our perspective as Columbans.

In the evenings there was informal sharing on mission experiences.  Sister Brigid Sullivan updated us on how the people of Peru are getting their lives together again following the Earthquake there  almost a year ago, while Sister Mary Dillon shared on Cyclone Nargis and the destruction it caused in  Myanmar in May of this year.
