In October 2008, the Columban Sisters, together with the Subaanen tribal people amongst whom they live, celebrated the Silver Jubilee of their mission in Midsalip, Zamboanga del Sur, Philippines. Representatives of the various areas of the Sisters’ ministry attended the celebration – leaders in farming, tree-planting, pre-school education, health programmes and preservation of their ancestral domain. All gave thanks for the hope which they now share and for the development to which they had contributed, sometimes risking their lives for the sake of their people. It was a special joy for the Subaanens to express appreciation for the Sisters who have dedicated themselves so wholeheartedly to serving them in the course of twenty five years. Sister Kathleen Melia, a pioneer of the mission, has remained in Midsalip since 1983 and continues to be the people’s inspiration and encouragement as she accompanies them towards greater self-reliance. Others who served the mission for shorter periods were remembered in symbol and prayer, as were the many benefactors without whose support the mission could not have continued this far.
