Congratulations to Graduates in Ozamiz, Philippines

March 15,  2008 was a day of gratitude and rejoicing in the Community of Hope, Ozamiz City  when the first batch of hearing-impaired students, who had begun their studies in the Special Education Center of the Community, received their diplomas as High School Graduates of La Salle University.

When the Columban Sisters opened the Centre in 1993, among those who attended were hearing impaired children and adults who never had a chance of formal education.  Sister Mary McManus introduced them to Sign Language and when they had learned to communicate in that medium a Grade School curriculum was set up for them, beginning with Grade 1.
Year by year a grade level was added and by 2002 they had reached Grade 6.  In that year, through negotiations between the Columban Sisters and De la Salle Brothers who administered Immaculate Conception College (later to become La Salle University), they were integrated into the mainstream class in the College.   The Community of Hope continued to sponsor them as they advanced to higher grades and on this March day, to the great joy and that of their parents and mentors, they achieved their goal of High School graduation.
