Columban Sisters’ Lay Associates’ Medical Mission

One of the Columban Sisters Lay Associates’ successful projects this year has been a Medical Mission Day, held at the Sisters Regional House, San Juan, Manila. The Associates, under the direction of Sister Mary Laetitia Talanay, contacted parents of almost two hundred poor, sick and malnourished children and invited them to bring their children to be treated during the Medical Mission Day. They also invited many adults who were in need of dental care. Those who came were treated by qualified physicians and dentists, many of them graduates of Malate Catholic School in the years 1979, 1980.

The school at that time was directed by the Columban Sisters. With the turn over of the school to Filipina Sisters from the local Church, many alumni of the school, inspired by the Columban Sisters’ vision for their alma mater, continued to associate themselves with the Sisters, whether formally as Lay Associates or informally as friends, always available to lend helping hands as needed to assist the Sisters and their Lay Associates in providing service for the poorest and most needy.

Amongst the alumni who offered their services gratis for the day were dentists and highly qualified doctors, graduates of Malate Catholic School – paediatricians, medical consultants, dieticians, finance advisors, pharmacists and lawyers. This was a most timely and successful venture which improved the health and quality of life of many who were too poor to help themselves.
