Community of Hope Celebrates 10th Anniversary.

On October, 28th. 2003, the Community of Hope,  in Ozamiz City in the Southern Philippines celebrated its 10th. Anniversary.

The Community of Hope is a  center for physically and mentally handicapped children and adults.  It  came about as a result of the findings of a survey done by Sister Mary McManus. Sister Mary discovered that there were many children with mental and physical disabilities in the Ozamiz area.  Because of lack of facilities for their education, many of these children were forced to stay in their homes all day.
In an effort to meet their needs,  the Community of Hope was founded.

The Community of Hope is a place where children and adults come each day and participate in educational and developmental programmes which are designed to meet  their particular needs.  Today, eventhough Sister Mary is on another assignment in her native United States, the centre flourished and has more than sixty students ranging in age from eight to forty .

Sister Cecilia Cuizon is the present Administrator. The primary aim of the Center is to help each participant reach his or her full potential In addition, education and support is provided for the families.  Together, staff and family members endeavour to raise awareness in the general population of the need to accept these children and adults as full members of the community.

The 10th. Anniversary celebration was an effort to continue awareness raising and celebrate the successes of a small center that has made a big different in the lives of many people.
The day began with a special Mass in the
Cathedral of Ozamiz,  celebrated by Fr. Zachy Montefalcon The Mass  was interpreted in sign language by a staff member. All the Columban Sisters in on the island of Mindanao and some Columban Fathers attended.

Afterwards, a procession of small motorcabs carried all the participants to the Center where a special programme of music and dance was presented by the clients, their families and the staff.  Then lunch, prepared by the parents, was served.   The afternoon was filled with games and fun for all. It was truly a celebration of the hope that this Center has brought into so many lives and and an expression of  gratitude to God and to all who support it.
