Peru

Location: 

 Peru is situated on the Pacific Coast of the South American continent. It is a country rich in the warmth and spontaneity of its people and in natural beauty and resources.

Language:  

Most people speak Spanish but many also speak one or other of the two ancient languages of Peru:  Quechua and Aymara.

Religion:  

The vast majority of the people consider themselves Catholics but membership in Protestant Evangelical church es is growing and is now about 12%.

Economy:  

About 70% of the people earn less than the basic cost of living and unemployment is very high.

Columban Sisters in Peru: The Sisters live and work among the people who have settled in huge housing settlements on the edge of the capital city, Lima and in the desert region of Ica, south of Lima.  There they run parish programmes for families  young people and the elderly.  They are also involved in promoting the rights of women and other  Justice and Peace issues.

Recently they have moved to a mainly quechua speaking area in the middle of the country near small town near Ayacucho.
