Location:  
Korea is located in North East Asia, close to Mainland China.  Since the end of the war the country has been partitioned, the North being ruled by a Communist leader.


Language:   
Korean.


Economy:  
Export orientated strong industrial economy with low level of  unemployment.

Religion:   
Buddhism - 25%;  Christianity - 25% with Catholics comprising 7.2%;
There is a strong influence of Confucianism and Shamanism.  
Christianity was first brought to Korea by lay people.  Even after suffering severe persecution during which the country was cut off from the rest of the world, pockets of faithful Catholics still remained in the country.

The Columban Sisters in Korea:  
The Sisters work with those who, for one reason or another,  are unable to avail of the current prosperity.  This includes medical work with the poor and the dying, centres for special needs children, services for women exploited by illegal entertainment industry and programmes that highlight injustices and exploitation of women and migrants.
