St.  Columban's Hospice is Officially Opened in Korea.

The newly built St. Columban’s Home is situated  in Chun Chon, South Korea. It is Korea's first ever purpose built facility  to care for  the terminally ill and those suffering from other diseases associated with old age.

On March, 25th.  2004, the centre was blessed and officially opened by Bishop John Chang,  Bishop of the Diocese of Chun Chon.
Sister Kathleen Geaney, Columban Sisters Congregational Leader, addressed the gathering and expressed gratitude to all who had helped this to become a reality.

Sister Nora Wiseman is the director of the new centre and there is a staff of twenty five which includes Columban Sister Elizabeth Taaffe.  Fifty resident will be cared for here and the Home Hospice  Programme will continue with  extra nurses being employed to develop this service.

Sister `Nora says: 'Our priority is the poor.  It is great to have the possibility, of admitting those I meet during home visits.
The Korean Government made a large contribution towards this service but Sister Nora has had to devote a lot of time and energy  to fundraising in Korea over the past few years to make up the shortfall.  Her home-baking sales have proved to be a big hit as are her bazaars in Chunchon.

Sister Nora is  grateful, too, for the efforts made in Ireland especially by the people of her native County Cork who have raised money for this cause.
Fundraising will continue for sometime yet as it will be necessary to buy equipment and import some medication.   Salaries for staff and maintenance of the facility will also prove expensive.
