Over 50 years ago Joseph Choa was a patient of the Columban Sisters in the Ruttonjee Sanatorium, Hong Kong suffering from a serious illness. He made a full recovery and now lives in Canada with his wife and son.

In June 2004, during a visit to Ireland, Joseph made a special trip to Magheramore to thank the Sisters who had once helped him back to health.

Joseph writes:
"My recent visit to Magheramore, Ireland to visit Sister Mary Gabriel was the realization of my wish of many years - to see her once again where she now lives at the  Columban Sisters' Motherhouse in Ireland.
I first met Sister. Gabriel in June, 1953 when I was hospitalized at the then Ruttonjee Sanatorium in Hong Kong, suffering from tuberculosis. Under the care of Sister  Gabriel,  the  late Sister Aquinas, both of whom were doctors, and a  team of dedicated nursing staff  I made good progress and was discharged after one year.   Following another year attending  regularly as an out patient  at the hospital I was given a clean bill of health.
Because of my prolonged illness I missed out on my education.  However, I attended a government sponsored evening school for a few years  and I was able to get my first job.  I continued to make good progress in life and in 1992  my family and I  went  to live in Canada.
I still remember vividly the warm and reassuring smiles of the Sisters when they made their rounds in the ward, giving me great comfort and encouragement  as I battled with the disease.
I hope my brief story will serve to encourage others. No  matter what situation you may find yourself in, never give up hope. Look to the brighter side of life and God will take care of you while you do  your  best to help yourself".
