COLUMBAN SISTERS IN CHILE

The FIrst 25 Years

by Sister Catherine Hurley

Congratulations, Sister Catherine!

Another valuable contribution to the Columban Sisters’ story.

This history of the Sisters first 25 years in Chile Lindo (beautiful Chile) as Chile can truly be called, is well illustrated with photos which capture specific aspects of the story.

Sister Ita McElwain, one of the first Columban Sisters missioned in Chile, presiding at the book launch

On 5 April 2010, in a very simple ceremony in the Motherhouse of the Columban Sisters, Sister Catherine Hurley presented us with her new book:

Columban Sisters in Chile

With a lovely picture of the Atacama Desert in bloom on the cover, the book is an account of our sisters first 25 years in Chile.

Beginning with the inspiring letter of Auxiliary Bishop of Santiago Fernando Ariztia Ruiz who, in 1973 invited the Columban Sisters to be an evangelizing presence with the poor in his diocese, Sister Catherine unfolds a story of faith and mission, a story of courage and enterprise, of pain and joy.

Of the Chilean people, who as recently as February this year endured the effects of the powerful earthquake,

Sister Catherine writes:

“The Chilean people welcomed the Sisters into their homes and their lives and the Sisters walked alongside them with respect and admiration.”

The author, Sister Catherine, shares with the assembled group
